Wage Protection System

WPS was implemented by the UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) in 2009 and is mandatory for all companies in the UAE that employ workers under a labor contract.

The primary purpose of WPS is to protect workers’ rights, particularly their wages, and to increase transparency in employer-employee financial transactions. It ensures that wages are paid promptly and in full, and it also helps the government monitor labor market conditions.

What is WPS ?

The Wage Protection System (WPS) is an electronic salary transfer system implemented by the UAE government to ensure the timely and full payment of wages to employees. It requires employers to pay their employees’ wages through approved financial institutions such as banks, exchange houses, or financial companies. The system ensures that all payments are transparent, traceable, and compliant with UAE labor laws. WPS also monitors wage payments to protect workers from fraud or delayed payments by employers.

Features of WPS:

Mandatory for Employers: All employers in the UAE, regardless of their size or sector, are required to pay their employees’ salaries through WPS-compliant channels. Non-compliance can result in penalties and sanctions by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE).

Electronic Payments: Salaries must be paid electronically through a bank, exchange house, or other approved financial institutions. Cash payments are prohibited under WPS to increase transparency and reduce the risk of wage disputes.

Salary Transfer Process: Employers must process salary payments on time and submit employee details (including salary, designation, and payment date) electronically to the MOHRE. These details are then monitored by the Ministry to ensure compliance.

Trackable Transactions: All salary payments made under WPS are fully traceable. Employees and authorities can track payments through bank statements and digital platforms, ensuring no discrepancies in wages.

Purpose of WPS:

  • Employee Protection: The main purpose of the WPS is to protect the rights of employees by ensuring they are paid fairly, accurately, and on time. It minimizes the risk of fraud or wage theft by making salary payments transparent and traceable.

  • Labor Law Compliance: The system is part of the UAE government’s efforts to enforce labor laws and ensure that companies adhere to the terms of employment contracts, particularly in relation to wage payments.

  • Preventing Wage Disputes: WPS reduces the likelihood of wage-related disputes between employers and employees. With payments being processed electronically, both parties have clear, verifiable records of salary transactions, making it easier to resolve any issues.

  • Increased Accountability for Employers: The system holds employers accountable by requiring them to submit detailed records of wages and employment data to the authorities. This increases the government’s oversight of businesses and ensures that employees are treated fairly.
